8) Read the music video example analysis on page 3 of the factsheet. Select a music video of your own choice for each of the following headings and explain how each one links to the heading:
Music video:Bad Blood –
Taylor Swift- Conventions (movement/narrative/artist)
One convention of music videos is having a clear narrative and Bad Blood follows this through a revenge storyline between two characters. There is also fast-paced editing and lots of action-based movement , which matches the song’s energy.Taylor Swift is presented as powerful and dominant, which fits the “star image” convention where the artist is central and memorable.
The video uses intertextual references to action films such as Kill Bill and Sin City. This is shown through the costumes, weapons, and stylised fight scenes. These references make the video more exciting and allow audiences to recognise familiar film styles.
The video represents women as strong, independent, and powerful rather than passive. This challenges traditional gender stereotypes, as the female characters are shown as fighters and leaders instead of being objectified. However, some may argue it still focuses heavily on appearance and glamour.
The target audience is likely younger pop fans, especially those who follow Taylor Swift. The action, celebrity cameos, and dramatic storyline make it appealing and entertaining. Intertextual references also attract audiences who enjoy films, widening its appeal.
9) Watch the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (1993). How did this video set the conventions for later hip-hop music videos?
Everyday lifestyle narrative:One key convention it set is the focus on a day-in-the-life narrative. The video follows Ice Cube through a normal, relatively positive day in his neighbourhood. This influenced later hip-hop videos to show artists’ lifestyles, routines, and environments rather than just abstract performances.Urban setting and realism:The video is grounded in a real urban environment which became a major convention. Later hip-hop videos often use similar settings to create authenticity and reflect the artist’s background and experiences.Representation of masculinity and status:It presents a version of masculinity linked to respect, control, and success (socialising, relationships, driving nice cars). This helped establish a convention where hip-hop artists are shown as confident and in control of their environment.Link between lyrics and visuals:The visuals closely match the lyrics (showing events Ice Cube raps about). This became a common convention in hip-hop videos, helping audiences follow the story and connect more with the song.Artist as the central focus:Ice Cube is in most scenes, reinforcing the idea that the artist is the main attraction. This “star image” convention is now standard in hip-hop, where the performer’s identity and persona are key.
