0.00-1.00-In the secquence from this timing we see a wide angled shot of all the helicopters.Furthermore there is continuity editing because we see the before version of all the helicopters and then the after when all of them come togehter into one form.There is a use of a jump cut between all the characters when they notice their companions around them.It then switches to a medium close up which allows us as the audience to see how the soldiers are feeling.Moreover the pace increases when all the helicopters start to move which creates enigma and action codes because it tell us as the audience that violence is about to occour.Between this time there is a zoom in and low angled shot where the camera is below the eye of the helicopter.This portrays to us as the audience that the soldiers are dominant because they have the high angle.All the helicopters are in line which follows the 180 degree rule because the camera is in centre of action.
1.00-2.00-In this sequence there is a moving shot which displays all helicopters in uniformity.This could connote the soldiers as practical because being in uniformity makes them proffessional and ready for action.The use of montage displays the switch in setting and the fact that the pace decreases (match on action).The scence now displays a binary opposition as the school shows connotations of a calm joyful and safe place and then switches to the helicopter which shows connotations of violence and unsafety.Furthermore the pace increases when it moves back to the helicopter scene which displays to the audience an enigma and action code because the helicopters contain guns and soldiers which are accosiated with violence.
2.00-3.00-In this sequence there is an increase in pace.As well as this there is a camera shake which could display the aggression of the characters that are shown.The use of a straight cut introduces a new setting where the pace increases rapidly.This creates an action code because the increase in pace matches the characters movements which highlights the sense of urgency.The jump cut between the helicopter and characters create an enigma code because the helicopters are all still in uniformity whereas the characters on the ground are frenzied.Additionaly there is a further use of binary oppositions.The scared people on the ground make us as the audience sympathise with them because they are in a situation between life and death.However on the other hand there are aggressive soldiers in the helicopters killing innocent people (or so we think) which makes us as the audience feel ampathy towards the soldiers.In the clip there is a deep use of contrapuntal sound which is happy joyful fast paced music that is sown to an aggressive violent scene which confuses us as the audience because we do not know if they are commiting good or bad actions.
3.00-4.24-In this sequence there is a use of an establishing shot of the fire as well as a pov shot.There is further use of continuity editing and a zoom in on the violent actions which is seen as an enigma code.The use of a sound bridge of the man speaking on the speaker follows into the action and fight scene which illustrates to us as an audience that this is seen as very normal for these soldiers and is part of their daily routine.Additionally the idea of a crane shot practically displays the pov of the helicopter and shows connotations of it being dominant because they make the people on the ground seem small and petite.This reinforces the idea of a power dynamic between the soldiers and characters on the ground.
mise-en-scene:
Costume:soldiers are in camoflaged outfits which shows denotations and connotations of being hidden.This further creates enigma and action codes because of the use of binary oppositions.There is a 'tribe'in a desserted area and they have old run down raggedy clothes wheras the soldiers are in clean profeessional work uniform.Lighting:Is highkey but it could be seen that it is natural which gives a personal feeling to the audience of people who live in struggling countries as they may relate to violence in war.Actor facial expression:soldiers have serious facial expressions when violence occors but they are also calm/happy at times which could show connotations they have no remorse for the people they are shooting.Makeup/hair-dirty.props-guns and machinery which shows denotations of violence.Setting:The school shows connotations of purity and safety untill its shot down by soldiers.
conclusion
In conclusion in this scene i edited for my 750 word analysis i overall believe that the all the aspects i have learnt in film and tv language help editing.This is because they are easier to spot and allows a movie to be better.Editing in this clip i analysed makes me as an audience see the soldiers as the bad guys due to binary oppositions.This could be the preffered reading the director wants me to take away from the clip due to how it has been edited which makes the soldiers seem as the bad guys and the characters who are on the ground the victems.However some people may have an oppositional reading and may conclude that the soldiers are just doing their job and they have no contol over what they do and this is mostly seen due to how their facial expressions are.In my opinion the editing used in this clip is very effective on showing the roles that soldiers have in socicety.
