Read the whole of Factsheet and answer the following questions to show your comprehensive knowledge of the television drama genre:

1) What is serial television drama? Write your own definition.

It is a genre that contains a continuous unfolding storyline that creates enigma and action codes. It spans multiple episodes, seasons or an entire series that engaged audiences.

2) List five of the TV dramas discussed in the history of the genre on page 1 of the factsheet. How has the genre evolved over time?

-The Avengers (1961-1969)
-Danger man (1962-1968)
-The Sweeny (1975-1978)
-Minder (1978-1944)
-Hutch(1975-1979)

I believe that genre has changed significantly because it now contains more of a thriller to people and setting is seen as much more developed.

-science fiction-The expanse
-family -parenthood
-teen-adolescence (2025)

4) Why is setting so important for TV drama?

Setting is so important because it makes the storyline much more interesting. This is because it would build up enigma and action codes.Furthermore if the setting is a known location people are more likey to be interested with the narrative of a Tv drama.

5) How do TV dramas typically use character? What audience pleasures can be linked to character in TV drama? (Hint: Uses & Gratifications theory!)

Tv dramas normally use characters to fit Blumer+Katz theory of gratification.Characters create a sense of personal identity to audiences through personal experiences or mental health struggles.Furthermore the use of a sense of personal relationships are seen within a character and an audience because we feel deeply connected with people we see on television. In a way there is a sense of surveillance without knowing in TV dramas because we are entertained in an educational way.Characters also fully create the happiness of diversion because it means that we are enjoyed by things we see on television rather than the things bothering us in real life.

6) What is a multi-strand narrative? Give an example of a TV drama that features a multi-strand narrative.

A multi-strand narrative is a storytelling structure that focuses on multiple independent storylines or characters simultaneously rather than focusing on a single protagonist.

For example Love actually (2003)

7) What is a cold opening?

A cold opening is a narrative technique in television and film where a scene, action or dialogue sequence occurs immediately before the title sequence and opening credits.

8) How can Todorov's theory of equilibrium be applied to TV drama serials?

It can be applied through the idea of:
equilibrium->normality,haopy family or a happy friendship with no disruption
disequilibrium->family drama, friendship drama or a villan interfered with something
new equilibrium->resolution and normality is restored

9) What is the typical form for TV dramas and how are the programmes typically distributed to an audience?

Typical forms of Tv dramas have a complex long formed, increasingly serialized structure that mirror cinema. The distribution has shifted from traditional linear broadcasting to streaming or on demand. This is seen as more convinent for audiences because it means that people are able to watch TV drams from the comfort of their own home.

10) How have subscription channels (such as HBO) and streaming services (such as Netflix and Amazon Prime) changed the form and content of TV dramas?

They have shifted away from the traditional broadcasting model by removing rigid time constraints and enabling high budget worthy content to keep an audience engaged.

11) Choose a TV drama and do your own analysis of it using the SETTING / CHARACTERS / NARRATIVE / FORM headings as featured on page 3 of the factsheet.
